Irrigation system development
This recently established company will capitalize on emerging opportunities within the agricultural sector. Our main business activities will include providing water to the rice farms which cover approximately 20,000 hectares of fertile land in Kampong Thom province in the heart of Cambodia, as well as supplying fertilizers, pesticides and other rice-farming related services. Our endeavours have already enabled farmers in some areas to increase their yields and have helped them increase their planting capacity to two, and in some cases three, times per year.
Cassava
In order to capitalize on the growing demand, and higher prices, for cassava (tapioca), the Daun Penh Agrico Company acquired a land concession of 8,800 hectares in Ratanakiri Province in the north-east of Cambodia in early 2011. The concession is located just 70 km from the Cambodian-Vietnamese international border crossing and benefits from proximity to natural water sources. The conditions and climate are perfect for growing cassava, which Daun Penh Agrico then processes into tapioca starch and exports the finished product.. The farm is irrigated with a cutting-edge drip irrigation system imported from Israel which is managed by a group of foreign experts and experienced Cambodian agronomists. The expected yield is triple that of conventional cultivation in the country.Including our 20 ton/per day processing plant, our total investment in this project is $20 million US and the expected recoupment period is three years.
Rice
While food security has become a global challenge and amid the strong support from the Royal Government of Cambodia in rice production and export, Daun Penh Diamond Rice has exploited the benefits from this opportunity to become a significant player in the milled rice export value chain. On over 1,500 hectare plot of land in Bakong, Siem Reap, the project has been conducting a pilot test on 35ha on rice farming by employing advanced method, named System of Rice Intensification (SRI), and using Korean-born Indigenous Microorganisms (IMO) and compost fertilizer. With advanced farming method and organic fertilizers, the Project uses Sen Pidor seed, the local premium quality seed in Cambodia. This Rice Project is the intersection between the Company’s three sets of core expertise: Irrigation Solutions, Rice Technical Know-how and Green Management. As the country’s average yield per hectare per season for paddy rice is less than 3 tons, the yield from this Rice Project is conservatively forecasted at 6 tons/ha, at its initial stage and is expected to increase gradually. Apart from the pilot test being executed, the Project is also rolling out its first season of 150ha in early January 2012. The second dry crop is expected to start in April. According to plan, the Project will roll out full scale to 1,600ha in the next four seasons.
